13 Tips for Traveling with Your Period

Periods, like most of life are unpredictable. Even if you chart yours out, just the stress of planning can throw it off.  Whether it is a girls weekend in Las Vegas or the dream trip around the world, you'll be more comfortable knowing you have it handled.

Here's 13 tips for traveling with your period.

  1. Like a girl scout, be prepared, Even if you don’t expect your period while you travel, it provides peace of mind to bring your own feminine hygiene products and a fresh pair of panties as you travel/tour/work. Pack a period kit in your carry-on, day pack or briefcase.

  2. Did you know that your flow is proven to lighten when you’re on a plane due to air pressure and may continue to be lighter than usual with travel stress? Be prepared, when you are back on land, the flow can be heavier.

  3. Don’t add stress to your body by drinking too much or sleeping too little. Alcohol can increase the production of both estrogen and testosterone in the body.

  4. Along with jet lag, your period cycle may be off as well. Stay relaxed.

  5. Dress in comfortable loose clothing that will make bloating and cramping more bearable.

  6. Follow traveler tips for a good night’s rest. Earplugs, teas, essential oils, special pillow, music, or the smell of something from home can help you sleep and minimize stress.

  7. Drink water and more water. Traveling can dehydrate you, especially when you fly, are more active, or visit a warm climate. Drinking enough water helps to reduce period cramps.

  8. Apply heat for cramp relief. Take a long hot bath or shower or use a heating pad or warm water bottle.

  9. Exercise. Most travel involves more activity – take advantage of this. When you exercise, your body releases endorphins which help with pain management.

  10. Enjoy a cup of tea, cinnamon, ginger or raspberry can help with cramps.

  11. Take a guilt-free day to lounge around your hostel (or hotel, tent, whatever) and let yourself rest. You'll maybe have some guilt about "wasting" a day, but you'll thank yourself for it in the long run.

  12. Don't pack an entire box of tampons or pads, just enough for 24-hours. You can purchase feminine hygiene products everywhere there are women. Perhaps not your favorite brand or method, but you’ll find something that will work. And isn't one of the reasons you travel is to try new things?

  13. Pack Packidilly's Hello Flo, 13 essentials for a happy period. It weighs less than <15 oz., is packed in discrete, 100% recyclable packing, and fits in an 8 1/2" x 11" space.
